Reasons for getting shingles (because of complications)
Shingles is the only way to protect against shingles and herpes zoster neuralgia (PHN), the most common complication of shingles. The Centers for Disease Control recommends two doses of Shingrix (recombinant shingles vaccine) 2 to 6 months apart for healthy adults age 50 and older to prevent complications of shingles and disease. Your doctor or pharmacist may give you Shingrix as a forearm.

More than 85% protection is maintained for at least the first 4 years after vaccination. Shingrix is the preferred vaccine over Zostavax® (shingles survivor), a shingles vaccine in use since 2006.
Zostavax can still be used to prevent shingles in healthy adults 60 and older. For example, Zostavax may be used if you are allergic to Shostrix, prefer Zostavax, or request immediate vaccination and Shingrix is not available.
